I found that my 12 year old son has been peeking on me in the shower through a hole in the bathroom wall. I’m remodeling the bathroom and it was left open by the handyman. I’ve covered it up, but I don’t know what to do about it. I’m a single mother.
Yes its normal for young people to be curious about the other sex when they are older. Guess what, girls have been known to peak at men as well.
This is a chance to have a teachable moment with your son. But the key here is that you have got to be non-judgemental.
Tell him that you caught him and ask him why he was looking.
Its most likely curiosity on several things. If that's the case spend some time and find some resources on the internet to help answer his curiosity. Key here is that you want to be viewed by him as being open and acceptance of normal curiosity - and that you are willing to help him answer his questions.
It's possible that its sexual. That too is normal. In that case you need to explain that while you understand his developing sexuality (which is normal) that he needs to focus his interest on someone other than his mother.
Here is where it gets a bit legally dicey. Because he is under the age of consent (at least in any state in the US that I am aware of) you may have limits on what you can suggest or do for him.
It's fine to explain your version of morality. But, you need to allow him to develop his own.
I'd ask him (and provide resources) to learn about STD's, Pregnancy, and responsibilities of a father, safe forms of sex (including masturbation), and how a man should treat a lady. You might ask him to write a paper or do a presentation on each.
Then I suggest that when he has convinced you that he knows about all of that (along with your version of sexual morality) that you tell him that he is growing into becoming a man... that he has take responsibility for his own sexuality and romantic friends. That you understand that he will likely make mistakes as he works through that - as most people have made sexual mistakes in the past as well.
Key that you will support him and are there to talk to about various sexual situations with his friends. That you want him to in the future develop healthy long term girlfriend (or whatever) relationships, and would like to meet them.
This all may not jive well with your personal morality and standards. But, it provides a path for you to actually be involved and a resource as your son develops into the man you would like him to be.
