Is it normal consider to being polite as something necessary to be treated as equal?

I have always made sure to respect anyone regardless of anything, with some exceptions of course. The problem is when it is not reciprocal, even if it's between other people. I end up despising people who act violently or cannot accept other opinions in a dialogue without starting to disrespect the other. There are times when i start to disregard the human being status of some people or group of violent people and have a urge stand against them regardless of what they defend, due to the harm they cause. In spite of that, i will never act disrespectfully towards anyone, but i will never help that person >>regardless<< of what it is and maybe even combating these kinds of people in political, social and economic circles, of course, without any kind of violence. I don't think it's normal, but we should always respect each other, don't we?

Respect has nothing to do with politeness. You do not have to respect anyone, nor should you. Respect is earned; it's not to be expected. Politeness, on the other hand, is to be expected, not earned. However, both can be lost. You can be impolite to someone you respect and you can be polite to someone you disrespect.

I don’t get this. Politeness goes hand in hand with respect. You should start out respecting someone because you don’t know them yet. Respect is lost, not earned.

Poiteness and respect are unrelated. Respect requires thinking of a person as a good person. Someone you do not know does not deserve respect, as they have not proven themselves to be a good person. Politeness is simply being kind and showing courtesy to someone. It does not require knowledge of a person to be polite to them, but it does to respect them.

Sorry, I guess I think of most people I come across as deserving of a basic level of respect as a human being until they prove otherwise.

You shouldn't be looking up to random strangers. I suppose you could consider respect a spectrum ranging from absolute disrespect to idolization, starting somewhere on the mid-low end, and rarely reaching either end of it.
