    Sorry to be pedantic, but to me spanking means with the bare hand, not paddles or rules or anything else.

    Yeah it's normal, also common ...... just do how you would like it done and be aware of his responses, flexible and open to changing whatever technique you're doing, also to stopping IMMEDIATELY if he says the safe word, which you must establish well in advance.
