    Yes, the damage was caused by him, and some of the damage could have been avoided when using force to stop it. You couldn't do it yourself, but others can, and you recommending them not to because it didn't work in your case isn't the best idea.

      I think the best thing I could have done would have been to leave him as soon as he started becoming verbally abusive.

        Yeah well it didn't happen so now that we talk to people who don't do the "best things", we should recommend them some useful things that we failed at doing.

          Well, the best thing that I did was call the cops on his crazy ass, and leave so that is all I care about right now.

          Violence wasn't the answer, and it still isn't.

            Alright, let's adopt this pacifist view then. I only want to say that retaliation installs fear in the enemy and prevents them from attacking. Could be useful temporarily to reduce the damage.
