A lot of suburban 'middle income' white people (who don't live in trailer parks) think they're on the top rung of the social ladder. They don't realize that culturally, they're still trash. Anyone who travels sees this immediately.

Firstly, let's dispel a few middle class misconceptions shall we?
1. Socio-economic status is more cultural, and not economic.
---- This statement is pure hogwash. Most likely it was invented by jealous self-righteous wanna-bes. Money talks. Social group-think is a good way to stifle the recognition of opportunity as well as the assessment of risk. Especially damaging is the style of bible-toting thought prevalent in the Southern states. Don't be a conformist. If you see a good business opportunity - jump on it.
2. Old Money society is superior to New Money society.
----- Again this is crap. If the Old Money Rockefellers could trade places with Bill Gates, they'd do it in a heartbeat.
3. Proper manners are more important than intelligence.
----- Sorry. In the end intelligence will always come out on top.
4. The middle class lives beyond their means.
--------- This is a terribly damaging assumption because many of them don't. I have met managers, technologists, trade negotiators that live in small McMansions who do thriving international consulting work and put a majority of their earnings into market index funds. These people are in the top 2%, but you would never know it.
5. People with the lowest 99% of wealth will eventually surpass the rich.
---------- It just won't happen. We the 1% have such exorbitant resources that we will continue to own an expanding share of industry where wealth creation is done cheaply with robots and automation.
6. The richest 1% are just people like all of us.

1%... pshh, big deal. Most Americans are in the 1% globally. Anyone earning 35k or more a year. Even nationally, that's 3 million 1%ers. You're not that special.
You raise a good point - 3 million 1%ers is enough so that you 99% will see most of us on a daily basis. The significant point is that wealth and income start to diverge sharply for us. The top 2% are millionaires but have only $1.6M. The top 1% have $3.3M.
Yes of course the top 2% can live in limited priveledge. Golf courses, world travel and nice 5 bedroom houses. The thing is, as Nastynate has noted, that lifestyle changes significantly when you achieve our level. I comment at IIN mostly to remind all of you plebeians that although you may be satisfied with your lives, that you do not drive the global economic machinery like we do.
