I'm only a junior (well, in two months), but even I know the economy sucks. There are articles all over the web by reputable magazines and papers (Forbes, The Economist, New York Times...) about how a record number of 20- and 30-something year olds have had to move back home due to underemployment and unemployment. I don't think money is a sign of character, especially in a super-ugly economy (jobs outsourced, large corporations allowed to set up shop in the developing world to circumvent the citizen protective laws we have here that "they" don't have "there," a massive replacement of decent pre-recession jobs with low-wage service jobs...).
However, if I felt someone I was dating judged me because I make only so much money or I live a typical student's lifestyle, I'd dump him. Fast.
