  • Ahh no, of course not, but it does seem harder for women to be taken seriously. I mean, even in today's supposedly enlightened society, how many female philosophers can any of us name?

    • Interesting side note, I just asked my roommates and they came up with Nancy Cartwright, Judy Butler, and Ayn Rand. I was impressed! (even though they're all much more modern)

      • I'm impressed too, actually. And I have to confess that I thought Nancy Cartwright was the voice of Bart Simpson. I did know who Judith Butler and Ayn Rand were, though, and they probably should have sprang to mind when I asked the question.

        • (The only reason my one roomie knew of her is because she got her confused with the Simpson's voice actress in a google search once)

    • Well, like, 20... but because I'm double-majoring in philosophy and had to memorize a lot. Point taken, though, there's not much out there like that. But really, are you going for renown and fame?

      • Ha! I guess it's not really representative to direct a question about how many philosophers someone knows to someone who is studying philosophy. But it serves me right for not phrasing it properly and directing at you personally!

        • Ah, it's all good. If I wasn't forced to in order to get good grades, I'd probably only contemptuously mention Ayn Rand :P
