I don't think you know until you are in that situation. If someone asked me what I'd do if I saw a random stranger being kicked in the head, I might say that I'd run in and help him but actually be unsure that I really would.
In actuality, I did see this happen and I did run in. The strangest thing is that something inside you takes over and says "that really isn't right". I'm not some kind of hero (far from it) but I believe basic human nature makes you act a certain way. I'm glad I did. Even moreso given that the attackers ran off without me having to get beaten up too.
If it had have been a rape, I imagine I'd do the same thing. I hope I would, anyway.
