I like both genders, but I don't know how I would feel being with a trans person. There's so much I don't know about transgenderism (is that a word?) and I'd be afraid of doing something offensive.
The biggest surprise for me is that more than one person said something along these lines. That hadn't occurred to me.
As far as not causing offense, I think treating them like their self identified gender unless they tell you otherwise pretty much covers it.
