      • What about those who are on disability because they suffer from severe mental illness? Then again, the brain is part of the body and you did say able bodied.

Is it normal that I have much compassion for the the mentally ill but very little for substance abusers.

        • But remember that ALOT of mentally ill people are also substance abusers. Many are substance abusers because they are mentally unstable in the first place i think. You are totally right about the brain being a part of being "able bodied" as your brain controls your body.

          • Touché, Tommy Kat.

Most severe mental illnesses don't come into full bloom until the person is in their late teens or twenties which is the same time the most people start to experiment with drugs and alcohol. So is the person crazy from substance abuse or is the substance abuse an attempt at self medication? It's sort of a which came first the chicken or the egg scenario.

I guess I just get annoyed at how tolerant mainstream culture is of addiction and how supportive it is of recovery among addicts however it's not rushing to wrap it's arms around the mentally ill such as Bipolar and Borderline Personality people.

            • I have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I spent almost a year straight in and out of the mental ward. And a few back in my teens.

            • I guess it's because we can see people abusing substances, where as its hard to see a mental illness sometimes, it's hard to know what's going on inside people who are hurting.

              • True that. I get angry about it because the mentally ill person never had the choice or opportunity not to have that first episode. I just recently learned that people with Borderline Personality Disorder are more sensitive to adrenaline rushes than other people which may explain why they experience emotions so much more intensely than most people.

        • I'm just against the able bodied bums who are gaming the system. Those who can work should work right?
