I agree dappled but what would the first be good for if you are the only one that can tell its a lie? the second way I feel is the main part of making a lie obvious because in which case you are able to trap someone in a lie and prove they are lying. Being able to notice a lie through body language is good perhaps both is needed. Being able to noitice a lie and then being able to prove its a lie if I am making any sense.
I think the first is good in personal situations like relationships where you're the only one who needs to know your partner is lying, and the second is good in something like a court case where you are trying to prove a greater truth to convict or acquit someone.
If you could make someone unable to lie....

True but then again the first is always easist when it comes to knowing if someone close is lying because you know how they would act etc.
