I think the war on drugs has fucked society up more. There are plenty of legal drugs that cause more harm than illegal drugs. Isn't it better to provide treatment for those battering addiction rather than punish them? Drugs open up your mind and give perspective, some of the most brilliant/innovative people experimented with drugs.
