If you could go thru a procedure to forget painful memories would you?

Being beaten, sexually abused, or tormented and bullied as a child. Being raped. Going through a marriage and a divorce. The suicide of a loved one. Serving in a war. Illness. Poverty. Anything. Your choice. We've all went though things we wish we never would have had to endure, right?
If you could forget the memories that haunt you, would you do it?

In a heartbeat. 38
Never! (Add a comment explaining why.) 30
I'd definitely research it, but I'd be worried potential side effects. 41
I don't have this problem / I don't need something like this. 8

I think having a broken heart or the death of a loved one are things that make you stronger (eventually) and help you deal with it the next time. It's essential human experience.

But being tortured, raped, or abused is not essential human experience. I know my difficult childhood has made me a significantly different person than I would have been. Would I erase it and the personality traits it's given me? Yes, I think I probably would.

The aliens already helped me. Cause I no longer remember the probing, that metal device or being taken from my room at night.

if i forget all the bad shit that happened to me it would keep me from remembering why i learned from it therefor i would repeat the same thing all over again

  • Maybe. I've had a lot of shit. It's shaped me for the worse. But if I changed it then I wouldn't be me. Maybe in the next life.

I don't care about side effects..I'd do it. I carry a lot of painful memories and it gets me every morning.

Interesting...I wonder what would happen to the unhealthy coping mechanisms people develop as a result of traumatic experiences. They probably wouldn't vanish into thin air, but might be easier to change once the memory's been deleted.

If you erase them they will happen again, and it hurts a lot more your first time

Everything that you've experienced makes you who you are, so no I wouldnt want to be less than what I am.

Painful memories are often times the ones that teach us the most. So by erasing the memory I will have to learn the lesson AGAIN. So no I wouldn't remove the memory.

I'd like to forget the suicide and deaths but I think the bad memories of people, help me to deal with those same people and not to be surprised by human nature :o(

I wouldn't do it. Mainly because all of the bad things that have happened to me shaped me into the person I am today. Sure I have some emotional issues, trust issues, and other negative personality traits which I dislike, but I'd rather have these workable ones than being something worse. I could have turned into a killer, a compulsive liar, or a sex addict.

I am happy with who I am I suppose.

I've had bad memories but you can't pretend these things didn't happen. It's delusion. You need to face your life.

All these bad memories make us stronger as individuals and help us to function better as adults. Forgetting them would be forgetting the valuable lessons they taught us :-)

the mistakes we make, make sure we don't do it again but if you take the mistakes away we will make them again

  • Like in Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind! My favorite movie.
If you erase memories of mistakes, you could end up repeating them, because you erase the lesson you learned.
Memories of being raped/beaten/molested...I've luckily never had any of those done to me so I couldn't say whether it would be worth it to erase them. If they torture you and you can't move past it, then maybe it would be for the best. But if you feel like you became stronger after surviving it, then I'd keep them.

I learned to live with it. It was hard as I cried every night because I missed my dad. Then I got used to the quietness and now I just sometimes cry if I really missed him.

it's in the hardest times that we learn the most, when we are happy and all is good we aren't really learning we're just enjoyingit. which ofc is not a bad thing at all.

But, i dont know sometimes i think about this kind of stuff, If this or whatever, but then would i be like how i am today? I mean sure i have my fair share of issues that get away of things but i wouldnt care so much about people, i wouldnt be selfless, or be so giving, or maybe not even so mature, maybe i'd just be like any other 19year old getting drunk and shit every weekend, but i know of things that have given me perspective

i am who i am for whati've experienced. If i forgot the people that are gone or the pain that i've had, it would be lie throwing them away, idk it's hard to explain.

But life isnt all butterflies and rainbows, we cant just forget the things that are hard. Life isnt made to be easy. IF it was imagine how boring it would be xD
