  • What is it with Americans and being like obsessed with their family history?
Like people always say oh yea I'm quarter Italian, or Irish or German or Spanish or Swedish or British. Why say that? Who cares? You're just American, don't pretend like you go to Italy all the time and speak German.

    • How about if I go to Little Italy all the time and speak drunken gibberish?

    • It just shows how very stupid you are. America always made a point of incorporating things from all these other cultures. So you do not even seem to know anything about your american history. You might not realize it but America does not have its own unique culture. It is a melting pot as they say of all other cultures. So you are saying you do not want to be American. All Americans are not the "American" race so you can not say "Stop being German and Italian" since they can not change it. Since most Americans descend from everywhere else. Do you not know how America started?

      • I know exactly how America came into existence and the fact that it is culture-less. I in face know more about American history than actual Americans themselves (I am not), so before you start saying somebody is stupid, why don't you check your facts first.
Furthermore, whilst every American is of 'European' descent, this happened in 1776, and long before then when it was the 13 Colonies. So my point is, now that it's been over 300 years since America was first colonised, America now has it's own culture and it's citizens can call themselves American. A modern day American born in 1991, telling people that he is of Italian descent is just lunacy. They only do it to make themselves appear more interesting or exotic. It's the same as asking somebody from Paris are you French and them replying 'Yes, but I have a bit of Viking in me'.

        • I know it sounds a bit daft to our ears to hear someone say "I'm Irish" because their great great grandfather was born in Ireland (but no generation of the family since has even set foot in the country), but they live in a young country and I think it's completely understandable to want a link to where you came from.

I myself wanted a link (and found it). My link goes back a significant amount of time but turns out to be reasonably local (25 miles away). If it had have been further than 25 miles, I'd still have acknowledged it, though.

I know where you're coming from and certain things make me roll my eyes but it's only because, where we're from, there's very little sense of displacement. We're as established here as the Egyptians or Chinese are in Egypt and China. Not everyone has that, though.

        • So if someone comes from France and family celebrates holidays they only do in France you hate them? Is it bad they still celebrate their culture. Are you going to go tell them how very stupid they are for being french? Damn you for not only celebrating American made holidays. You are not part of our country anymore! So we should shun you. Now that sounds very rude. You sound very prejudiced.

            • My behavior is no more self righteous. When you are saying that we should ridicule any American who cares to know anything about their family history. How about the immigrant who come to America later in life. Are you telling them to give up all of their customs? Some things have to change but is it bad to be from France, England, Japan, China. I mean what a bastard you must be for this.

        • So you think people should lie about the culture? You are saying that people going to America need to hide where they came from to fit in? Well that just makes America sound very prejudice. To think people use to run to it to escape prosecution. Now are not even free to speak of where they come from. Saying we should all hide our race shows prejudice. Some people really can not either so are you saying they should go home? That is incredibly racist as well. Why can a German and Italian not live in America?
