It doesn't have to be shitty. (It can be, but that depends on the master)
The only really notable points are that:
* They are not "employed" , but "owned", and there is no fixed job description. (They don't earn salaries or wages)
* There is no fixed job description, they do whatever they are told.
* The "owner" takes care of their basic needs, but does not pay them (money) for their work.
Not all forms of slavery involve buying someone and beating the shit out of them until they are obedient. Such old-fashioned methods could never work in a modern society.
One Example, see: Bonded Labour (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonded_labor)
------
This post does ask "If it was legal to own a slave..." ...so...
The way I would treat my slaves is that they work in exchange for food and housing, the quality/luxury of which improves according to how well they do their jobs.
They will be raised from a young age to take pride in their work and strive to be the best slave possible and see their master (me) satisfied.
That's because you've been "free" your whole life.
If you were raised form birth to serve someone and take pride in that, you'd be happy when your master is happy, or rewards you, or his guests compliment your obedience or attention to detail.
Your response would be similar to that of a pet being happy to see his master happy.
------
I wouldn't be a mean, evil master, so my slaves shouldn't become dissatisfied. They may even realize that they are better off just serving me obediently.
It's easy to think "I would never serve anyone, so I can't expect anyone to serve me" but there are still people in the world that are currently worse-off the they would be if they were serving someone personally.
------
I would also like to add that I'm NOT OP, NOR do I feel strongly about this topic. I'm just writing long speculative comments because I'm a little bored tonight.
I do not believe I have been "free" for my whole life. I believe I have been controlled by my government, my culture, my friends, my family and authority figures. However, I do not believe those people "own" me just because I have to answer to them. I see a big difference between being told to do something and being owned, a difference which you seem not to see.
You can have no way of knowing what my or anyone else's response would be to being owned and made to do the bidding of another human being.
What if your slaves did become dissatisfied? Would you then become "a mean, evil master"?
I did not think you were the OP. I do feel very strongly, and I am also am a little bored.
"They may even realize that they are better off just serving me obediently." That doesn't mean they're happy or satisfied, that means that they're submitting to survive.
"there are still people in the world that are currently worse-off the they would be if they were serving someone personally." Uh, maybe it would be best NOT to pull a White Man's Burden on this (or ever).
Read the rest of my comments. I never said that slavery is okay. I'm just saying that there are more, somewhat less shitty and abusive forms of binding slaves. Sure, it can get abusive too, but it's a hell of a lot better than having the crap beaten out of you until you work.
Following on from the line before it, it's providing a more modern example, or rather a more achievable one in modern times.
You heavily implied that you would be willing to own slaves, which indicates that you think that would be ok. "I wouldn't be a mean, evil master, so my slaves shouldn't become dissatisfied" and your other comments about how you would treat your slaves are what led me to think that.
I also stated that it is all hypothetical:
"I'm not saying that slavery should be brought back, in fact, I'd rather that NOT happen.
All I'm really saying is that I think I could have pulled off owing a slave, had times not changed."
If it was legal to own a slave, would you?

No. I suggest anyone who says "yes" (seriously) looks up how shitty slavery is.

I would classify being "owned" by another human being as well and truly shitty, regardless of what they forced me to do.

Uh, debt bondage can be really abusive, though, so I'm not sure why you're giving that as an example of how you think slavery is sometimes ok.
