If it's not an eating disorder.. what is it?

I'm 18 years old and have trouble swallowing my food. I get hungry and when I go to eat, 2 spoonfuls in i get full and swallowing feels like a chore, like it might come right back up if i swallow it. I've been losing weight, I get headaches because I'm not eating enough. I know it couldn't be an eating disorder because I'm very comfortable with my appearance. This year has been very stressful and busy for me. Can anyone tell me what's wrong with me so i can eat again?

Is It Normal?

  • I'd see your doc. Sounds like you may have some sort of trouble physically swallowing your food, or, dysphagia. An xray can be taken of your swallow to determine where and why this is happening. Sounds like you may have some reflux if you feel like it's coming back up. Definitely talk to your doctor. It may be solved with some medication and/or diet modification if reflux is the only reason. I am a therapist who works with swallowing disorders. Good luck!

    • I agree with this. It does not sound like you have anorexia or another psychological eating disorder because you are trying to eat. You most likely have a swallowing disorder.

  • Sounds like you are having issues with peristalsis, the process of muscle contraction during digestion, my friend had it. They can give you pills to fix it. She is fine now :)

  • Stress can cause it, could also be a sign of depression. I went through a short episode, couldn't keep down half a toast. Try to carry bite sizes snacks, veggies and fruits (not cooked), drink sugary drinks high in fructose-glucose without caffeine to try and activate your reward system, exercise (not for body, but for endorphins). I thought I had reflux, but it wasn't it. If it keeps going I say (how old are you?) talk to the doctor who may recommend meds to boost your appetite or refer you to a psychiatrist or determine a different underlying cause, I ended up using cannabis (moderation, don't go and turn into a stoner, take a bit for it's health benefits) which has been proven to improve appetite; not comfortable with smoking? Make a tincture
