I would not give a kidney to a dying relative

I know this sounds harsh, but I was thinking about what I would do if a next of kin ever needed a kidney and I just don't think I could do it.

I mean sure I'll give blood or even bone marrow in a heartbeat, but I just can't see myself intentionally going under major surgery and permanently cripple my own health for the chance they might make a recovery.

It's just seems too big a favour to expect some one to do.

Is It Normal?

  • Having one kidney isn't permanently crippling your health. It's a serious operation, though, to be fair. Do you know what is involved in giving bone marrow, by the way? If you do, and you'd volunteer for this, I'm amazed you'd stop at a kidney.

  • You're lucky that you even have the option to donate your kidneys. I'm on a lot of medication so I'm afraid that my kidneys are "tainted" and I can't donate one if someone in my family needed it. That actually makes me really sad, like to-the-point-of-tears sad, because I view giving up one of your organs to someone in need as one of the ultimate sacrifices, short of giving up your own life. I would be more than willing to donate my kidney to someone in need, even if they were a complete stranger.

  • Not to be shallow, but I don't know how I would handle someone asking me to deliberately scar my body.

  • Angel, lighten up. Most of our family members are old enough now; it's not the end of the world (ours) if they die.

I wouldn't either. I'd give it to my boyfriend if he needed it, otherwise no. I don't believe in pushing life, if you die or are dying, I'd prefer you just deal. I know it's hard, but if something failed, you're either mistreating it or your bodies not working- in which case why risk pushing your other organs to the limit?

  • So you'd rather see them dead?

  • I could say no to most family members but if my mom or bf needed a kidney they could have it.

  • It's your kidney. Nobody should force you to cut it out.
...But I can't imagine saying "no" to a loved one.

  • I would only give it to my girlfriend.
