Fun fact: in the state of California, it's actually illegal to be a communist and be a school teacher.
Down here in the south, though, even the teaching of evolution or the big bang theory are considered suspect; I recall once, in a history class, one of my classmates said something about why he thought the big bang was a better explanation for the origins on the universe than gods/goddesses, and the teacher whipped out a bible and begin shouting at him. "Indoctrination" goes both ways.
