  • I get what you mean but I know loads of kids who have their mother's name. I have my mother's name. I really don't think it's assumed anymore that the kids will have their father's name.

I have one of those jobs where your last name is quite important and changing it can fuck things up for you professionally, and as such I don't know of any other women through my work place who changed their name when they got married, and it's therefore a pretty mixed back as to which name their kids end up with. The couple decides between them. My kids have their Dad's name but that's because I changed my name when I got married. When I changed it a lot of people were quite shocked because it's not really the done thing in my profession. A few colleagues bluntly told me that I was being stupid. I'm still happy with my decision because I think it's nice for my kids that we all the same name, like a proper family, but I do sometimes worry that I've made myself start again professionally, and all the published papers with my name on are now not really associated with my professional name unless I explain that I took my husband's name. It's a pain in the arse.
