This is why I firmly believe people shouldn't give pets as gifts. I think if someone wants to give a pet as a gift he/she ought to simply offer to pay the price of the purchase of the pet or the pet adoption fee. I do not think it's ever appropriate to obtain a pet for someone and then present it to them, not even a mouse or a parakeet. The person for whom the gift of a pet is intended ought to be allowed to pick out the desired animal companion. I think whether or not this advice is heeded can make the difference between a wonderful pet and pet parent relationship or sadly just another responsibility or burden.
