My 18 year old stepdaugher wears extremely provocative clothes and is always vieing for attention from her father. I feel sorry for her a little and believe she has issues she's working out. But recently she separately invited her dad to her graduation and then a week later said I could come too. She's 18 and not so savvy. I guess she needed to exert some power. My hubby didn't think much of this at all and said I should come as his wife. His mom asked him why he always has to have his wife around when he does something for his daughter. I already made plans but don't want to cause even more drama by not showing up. Married 6 months and getting worried.

Is It Normal?

    If she invited you, no matter how casual or last moment, then go. Most important you should talk to her. Keep communications open and try to be always positive. Tell her how you feel when she is in a good mood and back off if she is not. Make sure you tell her how much you care about her and love her. One day my daughter was being miserable and followed me around complaining. Finally I turned and said "no matter what you say or do you can not stop my love for you". She went into her room and I heard crying but things were better after that for quite a while.

    A few comments

    1) You noted that she wears provocative clothes- this is not at all pertinent to the story and if you want to win her over you should probably refrain from judging her
    2) Don't expect her to treat you like a mom. You're not her mom. Just be cool around her, don't be domineering, and let her gradually earn your respect.
    3) Tell your hubby to keep her in line if she overly disrespects you. If he can't do this, it's clear which woman in his life takes priority.

    Sounds not so good to say the least. But didn't you know this was how things were before you married? It'll get old after awhile I'm sure. But good luck
