I think it's a pretty normal thing to feel protective about anyone you care about, especially those obviously weaker than you.
But it's important, with some people at least, to let them fight their own battles & only step in when necessary...
Just knowing you have their back is enough for some.
OP, are you talking purely physically or emotionally, etc as well?
Good question - mainly emotionally, e.g. being stood up for, but also just being held would make me feel safe.
Physicality is not a priority for me; strangely, perhaps, I feel protected when someone is intellectual, which I am highly attracted to.

OK. Totally normal IMO...
& also normal for guys to feel protective of their partners.
