I think this generation is way too sensitive and weak

Before I begin, I am not saying that it is okay to be cruel and heartless, but I think that this generation is way to soft. A lot of people say that society nowadays is crueler and nastier than it was decades ago, but personally, I think it is just because this generation bruises 10X more easily i.e. what would have just caused a scratch decades ago now causes their bones to shatter. For example, you can't scold your children or tell them they are wrong because "It hurts their feelings and they are defenseless and innocent". In fact I had a teacher tell me something along the lines of "If it's not nice you shouldn't be honest", and that was a Grade 8 teacher. There was also a 6th grader who sued her dad for grounding her, and she won. Also, I saw people calling it "torture" and going off into furious rants for putting up a weak electric fence to prevent his livestock from escaping, and it only gave a teeny tiny electric shock to stop them from dying a slow death in the uninhabitable environment outside.

Now, I acknowledge that there is such a thing as being abusive and cruel. It certainly is not acceptable to say stuff like "You fucking suck go cut yourself and die", beat your children to a pulp, bully others, or any other uncalled for agression. I also wholeheartedly agree that there are still cruel people out there in the world, and that people can be vicious online, but extra weaponry doesn't excuse a lack of armour. However, I think we on average have gone to the other extreme, and we are not even "a generation of men raised by women" (excuse my sexism but I'm quoting from a movie), but we are quickly becoming a generation raised by invertebrate jellies.

Is it normal to think this?

  • I agree. Our society is full of pussies who get their feelings hurt about stupid shit. It's very annoying to have to watch what I say and I never know why people get upset over the smallest things. I also find it disrespectful towards the millions of people in the world who have real problems.

  • I just cried myself to sleep from this post, but it's ok because my mom gave me a participation trophy when I woke up. As someone who lives and dies by Stuart smalley mantras, I refuse to glom on to your negativity. "I'm good enough; I'm smart enough; and gosh darnit...people like me!"

      • 'Stare rape' is apparently apart of rape culture. According to SJWs (social justice warriors), if an unattractive man stares at a woman he is literally raping her.

        • Hmm... Well, I'm not saying it doesn't feel like shit to have some creep staring at you, because it really does feel awfully disgusting and violating. It's not "literally" rape of course.

From my experience it feels like the creep who's staring at me is undressing me with his eyes like I'm a piece of meat. It probably feels for a lot of people who receive unwanted attention like the person staring wants to rape them. It's very rude and disrespectful to stare at someone and it's also a sign of aggression!

When someone does that to me I want to shoot their eyes out of their skull! It's not rape of course, but it is sexual harassment.

  • Sensitivity isn't weak. Sensitivity is putting yourself in emotionally vulnerable positions because you care. It's very easy to decide not to care about anything or anyone and shut yourself off to all possibility of emotional damage, but it takes a lot of mental strength to be sensitive (and it's incredibly enriching).

Ehh. Anecdotal evidence doesn't mean a lot when there are just as many examples of people being insensitive.

        • In any case, I am talking about hypersensitivity and not sensitivity in general.

          • That's not objectively a difference. Whether or not sensitivity is excessive is opinion.

            • Perhaps, but would you say it's a good thing for someone to sob endlessly seeing a child drop his ice cream when he still has $100 more?

  • Yes! What happened!? In the 70s 80s and 90s all the dudes were built no matter what age no one was a puss puss they wanted to play hard they played hard and even in cartoons these days like adventure time the kid is spaghetti and gets picked on he's only "strong" because he's in a fake world with a fake sword there's no lesson of standing up to bullies anymore and even the bullies are pussies doing everything cyber no one has the balls to get face to face to pick on someone and usually in the older movies the kid getting picked on always prevailed! Out outwitted his bully! He always got the last laugh now it's just....bs

  • I agree! I think a lot of young people are impractical wusses. When I was young (a whopping decade ago), it was EMBARRASSING to be physically weak or easily offended, now it seems like they're almost in competition for it.

  • Weak? Not just weak, but stupid and willing to let others tell them what to think and to step all over them. I've met only a handful who actually can think for themselves and who try to make their own destiny instead of just following the myriad self-destructive pop culture trends.

  • I'm assuming you're referring to your country, rather than places like Afghanistan, Syria, Sudan, North Korea etc.

Because - believe me - you have to be fucking tough to survive in those countries.

Personally, I think in Western democracies our sensitivity and consideration for others is a strength. We can afford to be caring, because we've overcome the kind of adversity that requires an extra-thick skin. Thick skin is a defence. In the absence of antagonism, thick skin can actually be a barrier against progression; we put up walls around ourselves that can limit communication and sharing of ideas and emotions. Why would we walk around acting tough when we don't need to anymore?

Yes, oversensitivity is a hinderance too. It's irrational to find the slightest thing offensive, it's destructive to encourage a culture of entitlement, of hypersensitivity and hand-holding. People shouldn't be wrapped up in cotton wool, because the moment that shield is removed, they aren't able to deal with the harsh aspects of reality.

So there's a comfortable middle-ground, where we recognise and respect each other's feelings, but where we keep things in perspective and don't expect to always be happy, to always get what we want or to always avoid being offended.

That's what we should aim for. From my experience in the UK, I think we've fluctuated between the two at different times, and we're still trying to find that middle-ground. But I don't think it's fair to place the blame at the feet of 'this generation', or to say it was better before. I don't agree that people have it harder now in most Western democracies, and I think that's a positive thing.

  • Feelings are better than truth nowadays. How you "present" a fact matters more than the fact itself. It's getting ridiculous.

  • Agreed. It's like we are "babying" a generation of pussies.

Especially the don't scold children, it's abuse crap!
When I was a kid and I did something stupid, my dad would slap me and tell me what I did was wrong/ stupid, or whatever. If he had acted all "I'm innocent" I would have turned up to be a overly-sensitive pussy!
Or the "don't be honest if it's mean". Honesty can hurt! Better live through a little pain and learn from it, than make the same stupidities every time over and over!

While people overall are meaner and care less about one another is bad. Having these standards is even worse.
A girl once cried, cause I called her an idiot. She ran over my foot with her freakin' car! What am I supposed to do, give her 5$ and hug it out?! She was an idiot and I have no remorse for calling her that. She can cry all she wants.

I'm so glad things in Europe are a bit more normal.

We have to be humane for the things that matter. I mean a kid sues her father for grounding her?! Dafuq?! How are we supposed to discipline our children. Or should we just let them degenerate into overly-sensitive, yet rude and cruel assholes?
We have to be humane about poverty, about real abuse. We have to be compassionate about serious things.

  • I would say people are definitely trying to ALWAYS be politically correct, and anything other than that is frowned upon. However, hypersensitivity can also make someone more violent. Every time I turn on the news, I read that some crazy young person has decided to take the lives of others with firearms over something that most of us would have let roll off our shoulders.

Also, I think the "cruel and nasty" part of society has a lot to do with financial problems. People are getting desperate and will readily kill you for your phone/laptop/whatever cash is in your wallet.
