  • I’m not a doctor, I’m a medic (EMT) and know a little about this.
    1. Normal. Vaginas are like other body parts, they come in all shapes and sizes. Typically even men have one testicle larger than the other, very few people are perfectly symmetrical.
    2. Don’t worry about the hymen, many girls are not born with one, and many tear it away through physical activity that doesn’t include sex (riding a bike could tear it). It is not inside the vagina, it is a small flap of skin at the vaginal opening, however it does not entirely cover the vaginal opening. Otherwise you wouldn’t be able to bleed freely during menstruation.
    3. The vagina contains glands that produce secretions which in fact continuously clean the vagina among other things. If the discharge is clear, it is likely normal for you. If the discharge is regularly bloody or yellowish, tell your mother you need to see a GYN.
    4. Normal for a teenager. You body is changing and hormones are “raging”.
    5. Normal and probably tied to how you were raised - if you were told “not to touch down there” or your mom’s “disappointment” about it. Masturbation is a normal and healthy function of becoming an adult and beyond.
    6. This together with #3 are a little concerning. Since vaginas are always cleaning themselves, they should not have a sour smell (like fresh bread or beer). They shouldn’t smell like much at all if you shower properly and wash that area with a mild soap. Contrary to what the other poster said in his off color remark, fresh sushi shouldn’t smell much either. You should see a GYN because you may have a yeast infection. Tell your mom, most woman have them at least once - not uncommon at all. Good luck.

    • This is spot on! The only thing I would add to this is to wear panty liners. A comment below said maxi pads. I'd try panty liners first. And talk to your mom and see if she can get you in to see a GYN. Good luck!
