I think i have as

I had a friend who has Asperger's syndrome. I became interested in it, and looked it up, and the more I read about it, there more I'm convinced I have it. I've printed a few websites and have shown them to my friends, and they strongly believe I have it as well. My family, however, refuses to believe me. My grandparents say that God made us all
different and that it's nothing. My Dad says that it's just my personality, and my mom and step dad don't even give me a reason. What do I do? :(

It's quite normal to believe you have a condition after reading it; especially a mental health issue, because you can so easily fit your behaviours into the criteria, and even start perceiving things differently in order to fit the criteria. Minds are very complicated things. Asperger's syndrome fits on a very wide 'spectrum' of autistic related disorders. Either way, if it's bothering you, try to speak to someone who can give you guidance, like a teacher or a doctor.

U don't have it most likely. When u study a disease and study it hard u feel like u have it it's very common. And my cousin has it and I really do think u'd know if u had it

    • I have considered that a lot, but I have a friend who's mom works with autistic and asperger people, so far she says I seem like I have a pretty good chance of having it, but your right, it's not out of the question that i don't have it

Look for a specialist; I did that, he confirmed my suspects when no one else believed me; a diagnosis can help you to improve

You're not alone my friend I've yet to be diagnosed, but have convinced myself I have it. I would rather get diagnosed just so I could know if this is all just a paranoid thought or an actual thing I have. No need to worry though until the chance comes to see a professional.

Why care about labels and diagnoseses? All they do is restrict your life and make you feel like you're being put in a box trapped from the rest of the world. And thats the last thing you need. I been "diagnosed" with a whole lotta stuff, including AS, but whatev. Just dont spend to much time thinking about it, and fucking be happy with yourself :)

  • I have gotten better about being social after i found out about asperger's, I've looked up what is appropriate and what is not, so even if i don't have it, I am getting better. Thank you all for your comments, they have been helpful, sorry it took so long to reply

I guess I would ask why is it so important that you must diagnose yourself with this? What are you hoping to achieve? People with AS typically have a hard time making friends, which it appears as though you have them and have a good relationship with them if you are confiding problems and concerns. The only reason I would really push for this label is if you are in school and feel as though you require special classroom placement or therapy services to help you with your social skills. Otherwise I'm wondering why you would feel the need to convince your parents you have this.

    • Well, I was bullied a lot in school bc I all I did was talk about animals and draw them and read about them. This boy across the street even beat me up a few times even though i didn't talk to him much. And i have a hard time keeping friends, I can make friends just fine, but then when they start to know me better, they think i'm weird and they stop talking to me. I elementary and middle school, people called me a freak and for a long time i believed them. I guess if I find out I have it, it would explain alot about why everything that is simple to most people is so difficult for me, that's why it's important

    • Yes, I'm pretty bad, I lose friends all the time bc i say something that is rude or I say something that is not appropriate. I don't have many friends that are very close, maybe just one or two.
