I think hell is right here on earth

Amidst this Coronavirus craziness, with people walking around like vampires with those masks, I feel that 2020 has been a very depressing year so far. It seems as if some strange forces have colluded to take away all hope and optimism. Too bad I gave up on smoking cigarettes, not because I want to live any longer but it's a really sick habit. (I'm 36, just want to live maybe up to 55-60. Can't imagine myself as a person older than that, would be rather dead. Hey that's personal choice). There's some personal stuff going on, my mom is dead, I was really close to her. With each passing year, it seems people are becoming meaner. I have no complaints but this world is kinda going through hell anyway. I feel sorry for all those who died due to Coronavirus but you know, if there is a God, I am sure he would be pretty pissed at today's humans. Our arrogance, selfishness, and hatred makes us not worth redeeming. Be thankful he hasn't sent clouds of volcanic ash or a large asteroid/comet to incinerate everything. There are enough nukes in this world to kill every living organism let alone humans. I'm not religious, just spiritual kind.

Whatever way you look at it, we're in the middle of a Hell on Earth. Humanity is a failed project. The sooner we accept the truth, the lesser will be our disappointments.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

You sound like you're in a place that I was in for a bit. I read the bible from front to back after coming to the conclusion that I needed answers and I really only knew what was told to me about the bible at the time and therefore only had the interpretations of others. Although I still have questions it was really insightful for me when I understood my own interpretation of it and it helped me get through some shit. I read an audio version of it on youtube. I'm not saying it'll fix all of your problems, but it might help you if you haven't already done so.

Yes. This is the time for all these athiests that have been so rapidly growing in the past several years calling believers ignorant morons to give that thinking a rest. This is a time where need to hold on to some kind of hope for a better place beyond where we are now with so many of the continuing to grow horrible attitudes, distrust, shallowness, selfishness, and especially now with the Corona virus. Some people are thinking it could grow to end up wiping out a fairly big percentage of this world's population. There's no way I can go with athiest thinking when something like this is happening. I don't give two shits whether believing in an afterlife will make me an idiot moron! I'm not going to live in that kind of hopelessness, bitterness, and fear just to be real!

I'm an atheist and I have hope and optimism for the future. It's never the atheists who get all depressed by the thought that we weren't born for a reason or that there isn't a plan for us or that there isn't an afterlife, it's always the religious people who feel like that. Even if that did depress me, I'd much rather accept the truth than try to delude myself.

Don't be saying truth like it's been solidly proven 100%, you're gonna take all hope from me making me bitter and scared as shit! Where have you found the final say in this? Don't be putting it in my head that it's been 100% proven that there's definitely no afterlife!

Well lots of things can't be proven but it doesn't make believing in them to be sensible. But if the only reason you choose to believe something is because it'd be depressing not to, then you're just deluding yourself. I'm sorry to be so harsh, I don't take any pleasure in scaring you or making you bitter. But I think it is possible to get over that fear of death and to live a happy life without having to believe in a fairytale.

I see now that neither of us are going to bend on how we feel about this. I'm not going to give in to what you're saying. I will believe no matter how many times you rub it in my face that it's all a bullshit fairytale. You're not the one with the final say on this. I've decided now that I'm not going to be scared anymore and I will not suddenly agree with you as if what you're saying is carved in stone. So don't even bother saying to me again that it's a fairytale.

  • Well, since I don't believe a real 'hell' or heaven exist then yes. Hard times happen to us all and we are going through tough times now. So in that respect it feels like hell on earth. If I'm wrong and there is a god he certainly shows that doesn't give a crap about us.

I understand being depressed or anxious, I certainly am. I think you'll find however that trying times like these tend to highlight peoples true nature. Good people will continue to be good and the evil people will be exposed for what they are.

God uses these calamities to expose peoples true nature. Heroes will step up to the plate and selfish monsters will continue to be the degenerates that they are, but it will be more obvious.

    Stay strong and have faith.

Aw come on man good times bad times. The world has seen world wars, plagues famine, natural disaster. Man has never made any material more resilient than the human spirit. Stay true to that which exists within you

I think the fact that entertainment and resources are on demand at home, due to modern technology, pulls us apart. You used to have to go out to find something to do, you might meet up at a museum, or go to a fair, but now you can just stay inside and watch Netflix if you're bored.
Furthermore, people used to have things in common- religion and culture, for instance. Most of the town would have a place to congregate, and would share values through this place, creating more fraternity. They would value family more as a result of the church, and have a community in religion- this socialisation makes for better citizens.
In places where people have little in common, it can be less charitable and family like. More corrupt. A nation is not a territory, but a people, and if there's no culture that ties two strangers together, they will relate less. Communication is more difficult and a sense of belonging is depleted, so citizens of this mottle of cultures will not feel any loyalty to it, as it is not theirs. It's nobody's, the only thing in common is the pursuit of money.
Furthermore, research has suggested that there's a correlation between neglect from the mother to her child and lowered empathy levels in that same child. Nowadays, unfortunately, it is harder to support a family on one income, so children are often left to daycare workers.
It's sad what the world has come to, and that selfishness has become common. We can use the past as inspiration though. Remember how much better things could be. The greatest wealth is each other, not money, human beings are the real resource. Reach out to your neighbours and those in need, involve others, and join a church.

    O.P.
    Why are you overreacting?
    Things are changing.
    This virus isn't that deadly.
It's just a trial run for spread and reaction.
That said, the "test" is the perfect way to collect and catalog everyones DNA.

Earth itself yes, but humanity - no.

Just ask yourself how in the same country, maybe even in the same town, folks are dying from hunger and on the other end we have billionaires and people that get rich and famous for nothing.

How does one spend tens of billions?! Don't get me wrong, I'm a capitalist, I love making money, I love my cars and stuff, but should I achieve my financial goals, I'll start donating money for research, for education, etc.

How does a doctor earn 500 Euro a month (doctor salary in Bulgaria), yet a deputy/ legislator earns 10000 Euro a month?!

Why do we spend hundreds of billions on slightly better military equipment, yet continue to shrink the budgets of science agencies like NASA?!

Our way of life is very broken and needs fixing.

Yep, I did mean the mountains, the ocean, the forest and the deserts.. Nature is our play ground, most abuse it, but nature is beautiful, it is paradise.
