"People used to read "The Prince," "Ammianus Marcellinus," "Homer," Were the slaves and peasants reading those though? How many people were even literate in those societies compared to modern America? I'm sure there were elites back then looking down on people with less status than themselves. You can't compare the greatest works of one culture -spanning decades or centuries to currently popular works in another. Compare Homer to Mark Twain or something.
