I think american cluture sucks. is it normal?

I'm an American. I have read about ancient Greece and Rome and Renaissance Italy and I think compared to almost anything I have read about American culture sucks. I mean look at what people in during the Renaissance and the 18 century wore compared to today's boring suits. And when you look at common people (google people of Walmart) you want to vomit.

People used to read "The Prince," "Ammianus Marcellinus," "Homer," now they read the Divinci Code and watch the Simpsons.

Conservatives love to say that us elite liberals are stuck up--but compared to the common conservative and American culture I can say without a doubt that I am better.

Does anybody else feel there is something wrong with American culture.

You're picking specific "great" civilisations at the height of their culture AND only picking the best of their achievements over hundreds of years. It's a trebly unfair comparison.

Compare America against a random other civilisation in a random time period, and I think America would come out exceedingly well. America is the country of Salinger, Twain, Heller, and Vonnegut. I've read everything Vonnegut wrote, but only some of Homer, Virgil and Ovid. It might be sacrilege but I'm tempted to say Kurt Vonnegut is more important. Certainly today, and that's all any of us can judge by.

Imagine how much was opressed and outright burned back then-how could we even judge how many progresive thinkers there were AND how any idiots there were....and even though we don't outright burn books anymore for the most part, we still make it virtually impossible or plain completely unfavorable for publishing or making public an opinion these days. Think about it, we can get fired, fined, legally held responsible and so forth for our opinions...it's really sobering when you REALLY think about the consequences of speaking out in even the most "FREE SPEECH" nations. It NEVER goes without consequence. It never will...

      I love Kurt Vonnegut. :)

Slaughter-house 5 for the way... I've read most of his books except for galapagos... :(

I'm sure there was plenty of losers back then too, but history tends to only tell you about the good things. In a couple hundred years, what do you think will be officially recorded about us? And not just officially recorded but most popularly read subjects? Probably only the greatest achievements and the bottom of the barrel, the mid section will fall by the wayside, as usual. There's been horrible people, great minds, wonderful artists and everything inbetween throughout history but when you delve into the subject you tend to find exactly hat you're looking for-either the worst or the best-the in-betweeners don't tend to make history.

Also, do you really think all the artists back then were considered "geat" during their lifetimes?? NO!! Many were hated, persecuted and forced underground only to be thought of as great later on. Most artists/writers were desperately poor during their lifetimes yet after a hundred years or so were then celebrated as wonderful...

I think the united states has its own history that makes it unique.

It would be boring if it were the same as European history.

    Wild wild west anyone?

I think South American history is really fascinating too!

America is less than three hundred years old. You can't expect one nation to become Greece or Rome in that amount of time, especially not in this era. Those were civilizations at their peak. Broaden your mindset.

America culture is being a melting pot, freedom, and escaping prosecution. Most meals eaten in america are american versions of other cultures food. So America has no real culture as it is the blending of all the other cultures. What are you going to expect? So yes you might think everywhere but america is fun since America just adapts every other culture that comes into it.

its okay i agree with you. but the reason that the u.s. is not “famous” is simply because americans are lazy and have always been lazy thats also one of the reasons for the high rates of obisity because we are lazy

Compare those tubby lard-buckets to the wealthy of the medieval era, or Tongans and Samoans of the old hierarchical system. That was considered a sign of high wealth. People in the 18th century also wore shitty (literally), torn, infested rags, working class people wore shoes made of cloth, and might've had two outfits. People back then read those books because they were relevant and cutting-edge. They are still read because they helped to formulate and create a basis for what today is relevant and cutting edge. Ancient Greece and Rome were great, you could own slaves, own women, and the enemies of your people could be raped, pillaged, and sold into slavery. You might be the worst liberal ever, but if you like all the things I've described, move to Sub-Saharan Africa, all your dreams await you there.

    still

trying to compare the US with other cultures that have thousands of years of history does just not work.
yes there are a lot of "fashions" in the US like this jersey shore shit or your music industry and you can be as patriotic as you want about it.

just try to be objective - you will see that not only what you call "US culture" sucks but also that its waaaaay more superficial and just not as traditional as "real" cultures.

    but w/e...

"People used to read "The Prince," "Ammianus Marcellinus," "Homer," Were the slaves and peasants reading those though? How many people were even literate in those societies compared to modern America? I'm sure there were elites back then looking down on people with less status than themselves. You can't compare the greatest works of one culture -spanning decades or centuries to currently popular works in another. Compare Homer to Mark Twain or something.

I'm an American and I'm not ashamed to say that our culture sucks we stole pretty much everything bits and pieces of other peoples culture fused them together and "made it our own" even the freaking food we eat chinese food, mexican food, italian food the most delicious foods came from other countries I could go on and on but gotta go to work !

That's probably because PEOPLE came from other countries and brought their foods with them. Did the Chinese or Italians who immigrated to America steal food from their own cultures? No. People immigrated from other countries and came to America, that's where a majority of the American population came from. With them they brought their own cultures and foods, that's not stealing. Of course from those dishes came new variations which did not previously exist. America is called the "melting pot" for a reason.

I have to agree with the above poster. America hasn't a very long history, and I can't think of anything in American 'culture' that isn't influenced by or already existing/in practice elsewhere.
America is the result of a medley of cultures, if you want to call the result of that a culture, fine, but it contains nothing unique.

Do you want an example of a unique culture aspect of the U.S? The hippie movement started in the US and spread outward to other nations. It is still strong today but has evolved into something much different than what it was in the 60's.

Culture is organic, it can be defined as a set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and traditions that characterizes a group. Or the distinct ways that people living in different parts of the world classified and represented their experiences, and acted creatively.

Every culture has borrowed from others. We take what we value and adapt it to our own personal lifestyle thus creating the society we participate in. America is unique in that it borrows from a wider variety of influences. No culture is free from outside influences in our global society. Americans have more freedom and opportunity to mix and mingle different ways of being than many other societies. This does not always turn out well and exploitation and ignorance plague many aspects of our society, not to mention greed. But we are unique, we have culture, and there are many people who are willing to stand up (or sit down) and fight for these rights. The right to just fucking be ourselves, whatever our background.

How and why people find themselves on this continent only add to the existing culture as it continues to evolve into something much different than what it was 20 years ago.

I don't think there's any culture in existence that hasn't been influenced by another culture. Also remember that culture is fluid and evolves.

  • maybe an american cannot understand that but to me, im german, there is no such thing as an "american culture. since you're talking about the usa....

correct me if im wrong but for the most part the "usa culture" consists of european, african, mexican and asian influences. so if you would take these things away what is left?

trailerparks and mcdonalds? if you call that a culture i'm very sorry for you.

The thing about America is, you CAN wear, read, act like people did in those cultures. We're a combination of every culture, modernized. The whole world is modern now, actually. (or a majority of it.)
Stop complaining. Go to a toga party or something.

There are a lot of ugly sides to Americanism but there are some beautiful ones as well. If you don't like what you see, change it. I love the culture of my town. It is getting to be event season where people gather on the waterfront every weekend to eat local food, drink local beer/wine, listen to local music, and just generally enjoy each others company. Artists sell their wares and give of themselves. Handmade/homemade everything. People exchanging their skills for that of another. It's about building community, not shutting yourself in and fearing your neighbors. I love this time of year. I just hope this energy spreads.

And I think it's those things you speak of, and things such as those in my town-festivals of all sorts-is what will be most remembered nd recorded rather than how many people got arrested for a DUI that weekend, is what will be most remembered-even though the negatives are recognized ad noted, it's really only the most notable on either side-BEST and worst...worst being lesser becuase of agenda.... There's been losers and assholes throughout history, it's nothing new, we just notate the most notable characters and events (OBVIOUSLY).
