It's not actually thinking to much. What it really is is thinking more analytically than the average member of society.
I believe that our culture dulls us into thinking that thinking makes us useless, when the opposite is true.
The same exact thing happens to me. I'm driving in a car. I look at a car. My cousin in the car is a mechanic, so I ask him questions about what cars are made out of, how an engine works and so forth. I start to think about the historical development of transportation vehicles. I start to wonder about the history of human travel and then I go off onto some sociological exploration of humans in the past.
Don't condemn yourself. Learn to hone this ability to learn more about the world around you and try and control yourself in terms of thinking so that you don't become distracted from what you are actually experiencing. If you are brushing your teeth after eating too many chips, for instance, you may forget to floss because your thinking about the ancestors of lays chip factory workers =).
