I'm a New Yorker and I do the same thing, so it's not a California thing (because god knows we're complete opposites!)
I don't talk to myself a whole lot, but when I do it's ALWAYS in an accent! It's just more fun that way. It feels weird to talk to myself in my normal voice. That's for other people to hear.
