I talk in different accents when i'm alone

First of all, let me say, I was born and raised in California and therefore have absolutely NO accent whatsoever, I also live by myself thus I spend a lot of time alone. Now, that being said, when I'm by myself, I talk to myself (not in a schizophrenic sort of way) and I do it in different voices, it's hard to describe but I'll act out scenes from my imagination or I'll be cooking and I'll do it in like a British accent, or a Russian accent, or even a Southern US one. I don't know why, or even when it started, but it's gotten to the point where I'll be with friends and I'll be imitating say a celebrity from another country and I'll do an accent and people are like "Wow you should be an actress..you're so good," and i always feel weird because I can't just up and say "Oh yeah...get a LOT of practice."

Why the hell do I do this and is this normal?

Is It Normal?

  • Hahaha guys it has NOTHING to do nor with where you come from, or any particular language! I'm lebanese and french, and I speak 5 languages, and I make a few different accents in each language! And I do that A LOT when I'm alone, it makes me feel less alone, and it amuses me, makes me laugh :) Then when my sister gets back home, I do in front of her, usually accompanied by a funny act and we both start laughing :)We imitate accents and people a lot together, it's really fun :) So just enjoy it... You know life is too short to worry about so insignificant details :) What makes you happy just do it as long as you're not hurting anybody or yourself...

  • Don't consider yourself as "accentless" just because your from california. Everybody has an accent..some are noticable than others, geez dumb americans

  • I'd say it's normal. I enjoy thinking up countless scenarios of how somthing would be if i were to do somthing different in it. People get bored when alone and often develop some way to pass the time. You are doing something with your time I would be interested in. You probably sound more lively since you speak different accents at times. Don't do it TOO much though. When around others, speak with accents when immitating or quoting others. You might even get laughs by imitating people like Sarah Palin or other people that are getting on the news.

  • I don't do that, but I do use different accents in my thoughts. If I've made the narrator of the book I'm reading English and stop to think about what I've just read, I think in my regular American accent, but if I'm having a conversation with the people around me and my brain makes an internal comment, it will often do it in a random accent like Australian. I guess it's just a way of distinguishing my thoughts from everything else.

  • a lot of times when i talk to myself i sing, like when i was looking for something i was singing about where i thought the item was...but thats WAY different from talking in an accent :)

  • Psh, that's just pure awesome =)
I started doing the same thing when my friends made fun of me for having a Canadian accent, even though I'm from Tennessee. We went around making fun of each others accents and it kind of escalated from there. We can all speak fluently in many different dialects now. We tell each other stories of our mothers walking in on us talking in different accents, and then compare accents to see who's is coolest.

I can't say if it's normal or not...but it's entertaining. Plus you can get a cool job working at themed places, like a pirate restaurant or a medieval golf course. Or you can become a con artist. Whatever floats your boat.

  • I do something like this. However, it's not always when I'm alone and my accents are outstandingly awful.

  • It doesn't have anything to do with California. I live in New England, and do the same thing. ppls say I'm good too, russian, brittish, irish, indian, even funny speaking characters like King Julian from that panguins show. lol

BUt I also do SFX and beatbox, so the accents come natural. I'm glad I'm not the only one, cuz it cuz kind of random and akward at times.

But as advice; say you get practice! Its funny. I say that whenever people ask.

The strange thing is; I read in a brittish accent without even realizing it. it's even thicker if It's actually written in brittish (colour, behaviour, etc).

I wish I knew you, lol:)

  • I think you have a talent here.
Everyone can't speak different accents, so it's a gift. I have a friend who's like that, and I think it's completely normal(he makes me laugh every time when he uses my teacher's accent).

  • I'm a New Yorker and I do the same thing, so it's not a California thing (because god knows we're complete opposites!)
I don't talk to myself a whole lot, but when I do it's ALWAYS in an accent! It's just more fun that way. It feels weird to talk to myself in my normal voice. That's for other people to hear.

  • I grew up in California, and I do the same exact thing... Maybe it's a Californian thing. I've put some of my little adventures on YouTube, because I'd be alone when talking to myself, but then I get to share it with the world. Lol.

    • Thank you, Dawn2Dusk, at least now I don't feel so awkward and..strange. Maybe it *IS* a Californian thing.

  • I do the same thing, sometimes it's not even accents just funny voices O.o

  • An accent is when you are pronouncing words wrong. observe:

    OK kids! a b c... q "ah" s...

    oklahomer

    packed with vittamins. VITTAMINS!

ay kilt im wiv a knoif!

    vash the vindow.

The only people in the world who speak English correctly are young, educated people from New England.

    • 'Vittamin's is correct if you're British...like me. How can accents be 'wrong'?

Plus, it's probably global...I do it sometimes..usually silly voices more than accents.
