I think it plays to the strengths of games like skyrim as there is no character development in the script and you can make so many different choices in the game that everyone will end up with a different type of protaganist who played the game a different way, but sometimes having a set character can work better for other games, for example Bioshock's story wouldn't have been anywhere near as good if instead of Booker and Elizabeth it had been a created character because then the story would loose all it's impact.
I strongly prefer games that let me create my own character. Do you?
