I still think people are mostly self-centered idiots

I am not asking a question or seeking validation. I am making a statement, and nothing I’ve seen or experienced has changed my mind. People are just generally shitty, self-centered, entitled and manipulative. People with truly good, generous hearts are rare, and the exception to the rule.

Honestly I think a lot of people being assholes can be chalked up to lack of self awareness. People live in a little bubble and don't think about how their actions affect other people.

Correct, you’ve stumbled onto and noticed the banality of it. Constant shallowness leads to evil.

        Just lack of thought process.

Ive got a paved bike trail like 30 miles long goes by my house from one end of the county to the other I use to get around places. During the quarantine people were "distancing" by walking apart spread out across the entire path with little kids running around so nobody going the other way could pass.

And they didn't even realize they were being complete fucking assholes.

Yeah it’s what I mean by shallowness. If a person only thinks in a shallow and basic way, then all that will occur are self centred thoughts that are rooted that in short term gain. So even if they’re bad ideas they won’t see it.

Yeah I get what you're saying. It comes from self centeredness, the concept of thinking about how your actions are affecting other people doesn't exist.

I find i do that alot at my retail job. I never think about asking my coworkers is anyone using this? Before grabbing the size ring rack. I always feel like an asshole. I did that at my primary job once. Was idk to thick in the head to notice 2 people working on it and I just went and took it.

Tried making it right after it digested on what I just did but they were like na dog.

You are right about people who can see the bigger picture and don't get upset with people who have different priorities or views being rare...

I encourage you to be one of those rare people. The rewards are immense...

I have no problem with people acting in their own self-interest. The basic transactional “quid pro quo” is the fundamental bedrock of capitalism. But I don’t understand why people have to be so crass and confrontational about things all the time.

It seems whenever people are confronted with people or situations they disagree with, or they find disagreeable, they have to make a big scene about how offended they are, or how wrong the other person is. I love having spirited philosophical discussions about whatever, but it has to be rooted in mutual respect.

It just seems society has devolved into a giant fist-shaking shouting match.

I think it depends what circles you move in. I've had times where I felt like most people were assholes, and times where I felt most people are actually alright.

You're honestly right, unfortunately. It's a fact of life that most people are out for themselves, and that's it. It's natural to be a bit selfish, but there are a lot of people whose philosophy is basically "this is my world, everybody get the hell out of my way" and do not care at all to even do simple things to be courteous. A shocking amount of people can't even be bothered to use their turn signals, for crying out loud.

Saints are indeed rare, and even saintly people are often motivated by fundamentally selfish reasons: because they expect God to reward them in due course or because they're desperately trying to feel better about themselves.

Still, I prefer to believe that your assessment of humanity is skewed towards the negative.

True, in a survival situation, most people will look after themselves and those they care about before they consider others, but if the perceived cost to themselves doesn't seem too great, most people will behave in a civilised way and help out if they're confronted with another human being in need.

But you correct that there are a lot of selfish, manipulative and just generally obnoxious people. Part of the survival toolkit we're all born with is the ability to remember those who help us and those who hurt us, and we also have an innate tendency to focus on bad things because they tend to be a threat. So it's not surprising that you have a jaded attitude towards humanity as a whole, but it seems to me that isn't entirely justified.

Agreed but it is not a bad thing. It is human nature to act in your own self interest and take everything you can. Society should change to allow people to be what we are.
