I think he means something along the lines of this:
Picture someone who calls themselves worthless, stupid, (insert any other negative adjective here.
If they call themselves stupid (or any of the other options), they're more likely to think that of themselves.
If I think about killing Mister Example all the time, it's probably going to become almost a thing of addiction or habit. If I constantly think about killing him, I am more likely to do so simply because it is a desire of mine. I almost see it as a sort of self-brainwashing, personally.
A more everyman type example would be this. I think about eating the leftover hot wings all day at work. When I get home, I'm probably gonna eat the hot wings, yes?
I sometimes think/plot ways to kill people?
