Pro tip when going through people's stuff: Move it a *lot*, but have an excuse. Don't just move the two socks, move the whole basket. Then if questioned, say "The cat knocked a toy behind it, I had to go get it", "It was in the way", or whatever. It's just more natural that way. Of course, if you went into an area you shouldn't have been for your illicit underwear-sniffing, then yeah, just try to move as little as possible, but people usually aren't going to notice precise location. They WILL notice if you fold their laundry differently to the way they do, though.
And if too many bits of underwear go missing, they'll get suspicious. But washing machines are *infamous* for eating socks, so one or two won't cause worry.
