I totally agree with valkeer(62628).He may really appreciate you and that's why he fears you might reject.I used to do like that with a girl and guess what,we are both in love now.
Don't confront him and ask him out cuz it may change his idea of you.just tell him that you have always found him sort of fun and that you like him.you'll see he tells you the same.Dont mention the previous absence of hellos.It's not weird but it might leave with no answers or remarks.
I'm just telling ya this cuz i've been in violent(maybe his is not violent) gangs and most of the big guys are hard just outside but soft inside.So,you may not follow my words but gd luck!
