i don't necessarily have very low self-esteem or anything (or maybe one could argue), but as i step into any room or grocery shop and people start staring at me ( or i feel like people are staring at me). i pull my cellphone out of my pocket and pretend like i just got a text, and keep staring at the phone as if i am reading something, mostly i just go on google and actually read something ( its very hard for me to pretend to read when i'm actually not reading something, and i do feel silly after 3 minutes or so. Sometimes i keep looking at the time on my phone as if i have to be somewhere smh. I've never pretended to talk to someone though ( i would imagine i would feel silly in a matter of seconds doing that, plus i wouldn't know what to say lol). But don't worry by the looks of the comments above the majority does it. Its easier to play with your phone or stare at your phone instead of complete strangers i guess.
There's a great bit in the film Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa where he pretends to be speaking on his phone to avoid having to say goodbye to a work colleague, and it starts ringing. I have pretended to be on the phone to not have to speak to people I do not like, but my ringer's always switched off.
