depends on how serious the relationship is. most of my past ones (actually, ALL of my past relationships) i would have been fine with a text, email, or phone break up. if both of you know it's over, and you're just not feeling it, then yeah. i think it's preferable. short and to the point.
for something like a serious marriage/life partner deal, where at least one of you is still very in love with the other person, then i think face to face might be better, unless you've tried talking it out/working it out numerous times, and there's just nothing left to say.
