I over think every little thing, is this normal?

I am a Junior in high school and I seem to fixate on every little thing . Like if I say something stupid to someone or something like that it will piss me off and I will fixate on it for the rest of the day. Little things that don't even matter will literally linger in my mind the rest day and its like I can't even stop it. I understand and realize that those things don't matter at all but if a little thing happens during the day like a social issue or even just giving someone a bad handshake it will stay/linger in my mind the rest of the day like a bug in my brain. I just wanted to know if this is normal or if it's some kind of mental disorder or something like that. Please help me out with any advice or comments you can give me. Thanks.

I used to be like that too. Like, I would say or do something embarrassing, then I'd think about it for the rest of the day, mentally bashing myself for being so stupid. But then I realised that people don't care that much about the stuff I do, and that while I was still thinking about it, everyone else probably would have long forgotten about it, and I would be stressing out for no reason. Basically, the more you think about something, the worse it seems...to you, not to anyone else.

I totally agree. No one's going to remember it by tomorrow or the next week. But of course, we never forget it. It keeps replaying and replaying in our head like a broken record. And with me, it's with the most simple things. Like if I stuttered in a sentence while talking to someone, I'll beat myself up about it for a couple of hours straight. Chances are they could care less, and I'm only unnecessarily stressing myself out.

  • I can relate. Generally the best way to deal with these kinds of problems is not to deal with it.

Fill up your day with so much that you simply don't have time to be thinking about these things. In time you'll find at some point it no longer was an issue.
