You sound like a perfectly sensible woman. There are many women like you out there, so don't worry about it. Women are generally more mature than men by a few years anyway. I'm a man and I hate degrading my fellow men,but I have to admit that most 20 year-old men don't really know what they're doing anyway when it comes to dating, they just want sex and they don't think of anything else.
As for your fella, he has good reason to be nervous. I'm 30 and if I were seen walking around with a 20 year-old girl and was seen by colleagues, family and/or friends, there is a real danger they will think I'm just trying to take advantage of the girl. The only way out of this is to simply talk to him and ask him exactly what's making him nervous. There might be other reasons too. He could be... err, inexperienced and didn't want to show it or he's afraid that the two of you would have vastly different hobbies and interests. Just talk to him and see what happens. All the best!
