I moved to southern missouri, and am slowly developing an accent.

I moved to Southern Missouri 3 years ago for college. I am from Northern Kansas, so I didn't expect a huge cultural change, but there is. The people here are slightly different in an unflattering way, but the worst part is I recently noticed that I have speaking with a slight southern accent on some phrases.
is it normal to be terrified that when I leave this state and go somewhere north and (more civilized) people will think that I am a hillbilly hick.

Is It Normal?
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • I agree with Shackleford. I am southern myself, born and bred, and you need to realize we aren't all 'hillbilly's'. In fact, we are probably more 'civilized' than you Yankees are. Oh and don't worry your big head over it, just go back to where y'all came from, and the accent will go away.

    Bye,
    Ally

  • Last time I checked Missouri wasn't even in the south, It may be the south of the midwest.

  • You aren't a hillbilly hick, but you do sound like a yankee prick.

      • I am pretty sure I have said my state on here before, but I'm not too certain... I am 'southerner,' we'll leave it at that for now unless someone wants to take a guess and see if they can remember?

  • its normal. If you want to admit it or not, everybody gets influenced a little bit by people they are around. I find myself sometimes accidentally saying a stupid word I picked up from my friend.
