My family have generally grieved for the best part of a year after losing a dog. At the end of that year, we've felt strong enough to think about getting another dog. To us, a dog is always a family member and never "just" a pet.
The only time I've broken down completely in a public place was over the loss of a pet. For months after, I heard noises around the house and attributed them to her before realising she was no longer with us. She was also 18 and had been part of the family since I was just a kid.
It's one of the cruellest tricks of the God I also don't believe in, that human and dog lifespans should be so different.
I miss my doggy.
