I made friends with a mountain lion, but she is having kittens?

I live in western montana and have a female mountain lion who comes within 10 feet of me to get beef i throw her. Shes about to pop with kittens. From what I've heard if she gets too dependant on me she will bring me her babies after they are weaned. There are nothing but farms around me and if I stop feeding her she may not survive, but I dont want her to bring me her kittens cause i have no idea how to raise them to where they can fend for themselves. Should I stop feeding her and let nature take its course, or keep taking care of her?

Is It Normal?

  • Keep feeding her, but dont let yourself get too attached to her.

    • Too late for that. Shes my best friend at this point.

  • I would totally fall into that predicament too. I'd wanna keep feeding them though, I think it'd be cute to watch her cubs grow

  • I agree with the others who have said you need to get expert advice on this.

In general terms, apex predators who become too familiar and comfortable around humans are fucking dangerous. She may welcome your handouts, but she's a wild animal, not your pet, and instinct and hunger once she's nursing her cubs and finding food for them could lead to this turning out very badly for you - and ultimately her and her cubs.

  • Aren't there any wildlife services or something related to that so that you can report her to and she can be taken to safer place? Coz if you stop feeding her she might start feeding on the people in your neighborhood.

    • The states policy is to let nature take its course. While I see their reasoning I dont always agree considering there are so few of them.

  • You're gonna wind up with a lot of those if you keep feeding the kittens and not getting them fixed. definitely domesticate the kittens and use them for security but dont let them keep breeding cause theyll all get inbred. Unless you want 2 headed 6 legged mountain lions, which would be cool.

    • Its not legal here to feed a lion or take her to the vet to be fixed. Also its not like I can grab her and throw her in the truck. I can toss beef to her but if I get too close she will make the most horrid shrieking sound youve ever heard and take a defensive posture. We're friends but we also know who's boss.

      • If youre not the alpha here youre gonna get fucked up. Those will come in your house when you cant keep feeding the whole bunch of em. You need to either establish yourself as pack leader or get the fuck out. Be the alpha not the food source.

  • Sorry mate but if I was you I'd stop feeding her. Natural selection chooses the strong over the weak. You kinda fucked that up but this is your chance to let it take its course. Sorry man, it do be like that sometimes.

  • She won't necessarily starve just because you stop feeding her. She'll probably try her luck with you a few times, realise you're no longer a food source, and then start finding her own food again.

She may attack you when she comes for food and realises you don't have any. Just a warning...

    • I dont think she's going to attack though im taking every precautions. I have a stun gun and pistol at all times when around her just in case. She did scare me once however. Theres a partially underground stone cellar on my property that I was trying to make into a man cave and I saw something move through the window. She was on the other side watching me cleaning it out at 10 o'clock at night. Shes always seemed submissive and dependant other than that one time.

She was starving when she showed up as a not fully grown lioness and looked as though she had been beaten up pretty badly but im not sure by what. Friends in the area are unanimous in thinking she was a pet that escaped or wandered off unable to protect herself. Im surrounded by agrarian farmers on all sides for 3 or so miles and there isn't a lot of wild game she can feed on, so I think she will probably die if I dont feed her.

      • That's a tough one.

The sensible thing to do would be to call animal control, stop feeding her, and cut all ties. But in all honesty, if it were me, I'd keep feeding her. Maybe even contact a specialist to see if they could help or offer advice. I'm not sure who you contact about mountain lions...

But I'm a sucker for animals. I do silly things. I guess you're the same, otherwise you wouldn't be in this situation.

  • It’s so selfish of me, I’d keep feeding her.

  • Are there local animal charities you could talk to about this?

    • Not that I can find. The state and animal rights groups maybe.

  • Consult with people who actually know about mountain lionesses, bruh. For now I'd say take care of them, can't you keep the cubs out of your house? She does only come within ten feet...

    • There aren't any resources here locally other than the state and they take a pretty cold stance. Im technically breaking the law by feeding her, but considering the fact that there are so few of them left, I feel like I should, at least from a moral standpoint, do what I can to keep her alive. If I tell peta or some other organization I'm worried that I'll get attention for what I'm doing and be fined.

          • Agreed. There are only 2100 to 3200 mountain lions in western montana. They rarely attack humans and if so its isually because humans encroached on their territory. Live and let live.

          • I just feel like its gonna eat my animals or my kid. Might as well kill it. Its not like it doesnt kill shit all the time. And given the opportunity it would kill me. Think of all the deer id save by shooting it. Then thats more deer that I can shoot. Everyone dies and I stay happy 🤣

            • Its pretty unlikely that it would kill you or your kids man. Your animals maybe and deer are overpopulated in many areas. Mountain lions are getting more and more rare.
