Stood Quarterdeck watches on a sub tender. Back in my day, the standard sidearm was the M1911 45 cal.
While they had us at the range every year, they also had us qualify on the M1 (another antique). As best as I can recall, the idea was that if hostile natives came swarming over the gunwales and overwhelmed the Marine Detachment, we were supposed to fire our eight rounds, and when it went *ping*, throw ourselves into the fray and club the bastards to death or something.
We were told to use the conclusive grenades against swimmers since when they detonate it would collapse the swimmers lungs and organs because of the compression wave which is amplified because they are a water filledbody swimming in water.
The Marine Detachment most likely did have grenades, but I don't recall ever seeing them. Their berthing area, office and armoury was a little world of its own just off the stinking hellhole that was Weapons Berthing, and it was forbidden territory to us mere mortals. The grunts were generally pretty aloof from us, I think because they were told that they might have to shoot some stupid squid someday. Or maybe they just didn't want to get contaminated by us.
I'm still pro gun after those two shootings

Sounds plausible.

I was on an amphibious assault ship so we were slightly more armed with small arms and grenades.
