  • I know what you mean. I have the same internal dialogue with myself, but in my case I think stems from my mild inferiority complex. Because I feel lower than everyone else, I end up trying to justify these feelings by trying to convince myself I'm better than these people, I'm special. Funny thing is I get really pissed off when I see other people putting on an air trying to be special or unique, but then when I realise I'm the exactly the same, if not worse, I feel even worse about myself.
I just feel that with 6 billion people in this world, no one is ever going to be really unique or special, and if someone truly is special (in one way or another), they are not a 'diamond in the rough' as such, more like a diamond amongst a bunch of cubic zirconia. Who's gonna actually recognise someone as special in a world full of people trying to prove themselves as different? Like with the common question 'what are three words that describe you?', nothing you say is actually going to set you apart, but we still try to exaggerate attributes that we think will make us more interesting.
I guess wanting to feel special appeals to all of us, some of us just want to recognised without actually having to work to improve ourselves.
I find that instead of trying stress about our own humanity, it's much more eye-opening to put it all into perspective. In this immensely huge universe, we are but a microscopic fragment, but we overinflate our own ego's and self-importance as if it's larger than life itself. We tend to filter out the most important things through the social framework built up over hundreds of years, the thing which we call our own humanity. In the end, does being special REALLY matter?
Sorry I didn't give you any answers, just a jumble of my own ideas. long story short, don't stress about being special. we only have one life, and that should be spent doing what makes us, not someone else, happy. Oh and if you haven't already watch 'pale blue dot' by carl sagan on youtube.
    Peace.
