I'm obsessed with the characters in a TV show.

  • What you're doing is normal. I'm a trekkie and I write fanfiction and put people together as couples I'd like to see. It's like a grown up version of playing with Legos, except instead of building with blocks to see what works, you're building with words and ideas.

What's going to get you into trouble is if you can't put it down long enough to have a conversation about anything else. That's unhealthy, and I think you realize that.

Do this... sit for a while and imagine a whole different story. Different characters, different setting, different everything. You have to admit, all your creative efforts are going towards building on *someone else's* ideas, not your own. See what happens when you set out specifically to write *your own* story. And set a limit, say, three pages, just so you don't feel overwhelmed by it.

This is an opportunity to turn a craft you've essentially been practicing with other people's ideas into something you can benefit from yourself. There are tons of examples of fanfic writers getting recognized and brought on to other shows as writers. But the people who are looking for writers are going to need to know that you can write on your own without borrowing from other people.

But whatever you do, keep writing and reading. I firmly believe that all human literary endeavors, from the epic novel to the back of a cerial box, adds to the substance of the universe in a very unique and special way.
