Your reaction is normal. The Oedipal dynamic you're describing is not. Even if you take that aspect of things out of the equation, it's a pretty base mammalian instinct to have that parent/suitor rivalry. It's not necessarily sexual, in the sense of 'sexy.' It has more to do with the parent being subconsciously concerned with what genes are mixing into their family tree, and the potential mate fighting for the privilege of becoming a branch on that tree.
