He assumed the role of father of the house as a sign of maturity, and it's a familial duty. The dreams probably mean nothing. I'd say it's just his mind accepting the fact that he is now the man of the house and responsibilities lie on his shoulders.
You need to mature and realize that he is in a stressful position that was thrust upon him, he didn't choose it. It's not like he's choosing his Mom OVER you,he can have both if you grow up and don't look at him like he's a freak.
