Joking aside, I'm not really surprised. I think a lot of people see being gay as something "abnormal", and their reaction, even if not necessarily meant to be rude or otherwise, reflects that.
I also get the sense that a lot of (especially traditionally masculine) guys are uncomfortable with or see gay guys as an affront to traditional masculinity, and I know from experience that no matter how decent or masculine of a person you try to be, if certain types of people find out you're gay, you're going to get seen as an effeminate fag or some sort of creepy sexual deviant. I think men are seen as more sexual in general, which probably plays into the negative views.
I feel like lesbians are perceived as less threatening, probably because women tend to be viewed as less threatening and/or sexual in general in society(and a lot of straight men seem to get off to lesbians in terms of sexual media content, as well, so that probably plays into it).
I'm homophobic because gay men give me the creeps.
