i don't think i'm racist... but i believe streotypes exist for a reason...
i lived in the bad part of town for a while (you know the black part). my house was broken into (by blacks). stolen cars were left behind my house (by blacks). my gf couldn't walk the 4 blocks to the grocery store without being stopped and scared silly (by blacks) driving up on the sidewalk to offer her a ride...
i became kinda racist too, but i recently told the black guy i work with that "i'm not racist, i hate all people equally."
just keep judging people individually. judging people based on those stereotypes (no matter how often they prove true) is bad news.
It's not the stereotype of BLACKS that's being proven in your story, but the stereotype of what POOR people do. Do you think blacks making 100K plus a year will want to steal your personal items or break into your car? No, it's about class and lack of money and education, not about race.
